Trophy Hunting: A Life-Changing Experience
Trophy Hunting: A Life-Changing Experience
by Keith Denoncourt
When I retired after 33 years as an Outdoor Education and Conservation Instructor, I was incredibly blessed to be welcomed into the professional outdoor industry by Kevin McNeil and his wife Patti with Canadian Wildlife Adventures. They invited me to Aylmer Lake Lodge in the remote far north of Canada’s Northwest Territories, where I became part of an incredible team. I took on everything from guiding to filming and had my first-ever float plane ride. This was also my first encounter with several trophy muskox, caribou, and a trophy-sized lake trout, and even the first time I stood in a place untouched by human presence. I am beyond excited and honored to be part of this team.
Exploring the crystal-clear waters of the far north and scouting for muskox with Kevin remains one of my favorite memories. Knowing that our efforts would help passionate people achieve a lifetime goal was deeply meaningful. I was in the company of outstanding sportsmen, and by listening to them, I gained insights into hunting I had never considered.
My hunting background had always been focused on subsistence, prioritizing ethical and legal harvesting without focusing on size. While I had harvested larger animals before, I’d never paid attention to the specifics of trophy hunting until now. Preparing for my role in guiding trophy hunters, I had to learn how to identify and assess trophy muskox. The professional hunters I worked with were gracious and eager to share their knowledge. They patiently taught me about scoring methods, herd dynamics, and the proper techniques for an ethical harvest. Their willingness to include me in these discussions was invaluable, and I realized just how much there was to learn.
A Journey to South Africa
When I received an invitation from Boris Basso of Basso Safaris to join him and his wife Lezanne in South Africa, I was thrilled—and admittedly a bit hesitant. This would be a leap out of my comfort zone. Taking the advice of seasoned outdoor writers, I booked my first-ever trip to South Africa, and it did not disappoint! Alongside tours of national parks and conservation sites, I harvested four South African animals, with most of the meat donated to local schools and orphanages.
The experience was incredibly personal, and the community's gratitude left a lasting impression. During my short seven-day adventure, we provided enough meat for three staff families and 64 students, sustaining them for nearly a month. Their appreciation was overwhelming, and the memories will remain with me. I plan to send some of these keepsakes to Dave Booth Taxidermy as a permanent reminder of this transformative journey.
The Value of Trophy Hunting to Communities
Now, when confronted about "trophy hunting," I feel compelled to clarify. Not one piece of meat or hide is ever wasted. Both Kevin and Boris invest extensively in conservation and ensure nothing is left behind. I have personally delivered muskox meat to Dene elders in Canada and shared harvested meat with children in South Africa. I’ve also transported thousands of dollars worth of mounted memories back to Dave Booth Taxidermy as enduring symbols of these experiences. Local businesses benefit greatly from the tourism our industry brings, creating jobs that improve living standards and contribute to the well-being of entire communities.
