Basso Safaris: A Life-Changing South African Adventure
Basso Safaris: A Life-Changing South African Adventure
by Keith Denoncourt
Since retiring, my life has taken a dramatic turn! I recently returned from my first South African adventure with Basso Safaris, and it was unforgettable. On this trip, I harvested four South African animals, and I’m eagerly anticipating my return in 2025 with Non-Typical Nation hosts Brody and Amy Teale.
An Unforgettable Journey Begins
The 26-hour flight to South Africa was daunting, but armed with advice from seasoned travelers, I knew I was in for an adventure. Upon arrival in Johannesburg, Boris Basso and his wife Lezanne welcomed us warmly at the airport. Despite our jet lag, it was only a quick 20-minute drive to the African Sky Hotel, where we were introduced to the comforts of South Africa with fresh shrimp, steak, and a couple of cold beers.
Wildlife Conservation First-Hand
After a solid rest, we traveled to the main Basso Safaris Lodge. Along the way, we visited "Adventures with Elephants," where conservation professionals shared insights into the vital role elephants play in the ecosystem. It was enlightening to learn about Africa's well-managed conservation efforts, which are helping ensure that elephant populations thrive in certain regions.
Unmatched Hospitality at Basso Safaris
At the lodge, the hospitality was truly above and beyond. The staff took care of everything, allowing my wife and me to relax and fully immerse ourselves in the experience. Each day brought new thoughtful gestures, leaving us deeply appreciative of the entire Basso Safaris team.
A Unique and Respectful Hunting Experience
One of the main reasons for my trip was to experience South African hunting. I had my reservations, but witnessing the Basso Safaris team’s approach erased any concerns. Every part of the harvested animals was used, embodying a respect for the animal that reminded me of the First Nations' practices back home. The meat was prepared by professional chefs and was both delicious and memorable. Even more impactful, the majority of the meat was donated to a local orphanage, feeding three staff families and 64 students for a month. I have never felt so warmly welcomed by a community.
Bringing the Memories Home
This adventure will live on in my memory and be commemorated by Dave Booth Taxidermy. With their support and the partnership of Non-Typical Nation, I look forward to making this journey annually, knowing that our hunting adventures are making a positive impact.
If you’re considering an adventure with Basso Safaris, don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s truly life-changing, and we’re here to help make that dream a reality for you!
