Aylmer Lake Lodge: A True Wilderness Escape

Aylmer Lake Lodge: A True Wilderness Escape
by Keith Denoncourt

For years, I dreamed of experiencing a place virtually untouched by human influence. Aylmer Lake Lodge, located in the far northern part of Canada’s Northwest Territories, fulfills that dream perfectly. Nestled roughly 150 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, this pristine wilderness, operated by Canadian Wildlife Adventures, offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in untouched natural beauty.

A Dream Come True

A few years ago, Kevin and Patti McNeil invited me to work with them at Aylmer Lake Lodge, and I eagerly seized the opportunity. Their team-oriented approach, dedication to conservation, and strong family values made this experience unforgettable. The fresh air, the taste of clean water, the scent of the untouched tundra, and the breathtaking northern lights are unmatched. Watching muskox and caribou near the lodge and fishing right from the shore will deeply connect you to nature in a way that is truly transformative.

Since that first trip, Aylmer Lake Lodge has become a part of who I am. Over the past three years, I’ve flown into Aylmer Lake four times—and I can’t wait to return!

Getting There: The Journey North

Your adventure begins in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, where you’ll board a float plane for a two-hour flight northeast to the lodge. Along the way, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Arctic tundra, countless freshwater lakes, and diverse wildlife. The main lodge offers all the comforts of home, making your near-Arctic adventure not only thrilling but also comfortable. You can even stay connected with loved ones or handle business matters while enjoying this remote paradise.

What Makes Aylmer Lake Lodge Special

It’s hard to pick a favorite aspect of the lodge—there’s just so much to love. As a guide, my primary goal is to help you achieve your dreams, and seeing the joy and camaraderie among guests is the most rewarding part of my job. From the flights and boat rides to the northern lights and trophy muskox, every moment at Aylmer Lake Lodge is a memory waiting to happen.

And then there’s the fishing! Patti McNeil’s lake trout recipes are a highlight of every trip. Whether smoked, baked, fried, or deep-fried, the meals are truly world-class. The family-oriented atmosphere at the lodge is another feature that makes it so special. It’s not just a trip—it’s an experience that stays with you.

Lifelong Memories

Another unique aspect of Aylmer Lake Lodge is the lasting connection we build with our guests. You may arrive as a client, but you’ll leave as part of our family. We cherish your memories and work hard to ensure they live on, even after your adventure ends. Thanks to our partnership with Dave Booth Taxidermy, led by master taxidermist Brody Teale, we can help preserve your experiences permanently. Their team takes pride in creating stunning mounts that deliver your memories back to you, fully realized.
